Long Point is one of Canada’s premier birding sights. Our 40 kilometer sand spit reaching out into the lake provides a major spring and fall resting sight for over 70 species of birds and monarch butterflies. With 72,000 acres of coastal wetland and the protected inner bay area sightings are plentiful both spring and fall.

Long Point is the home of Bird Studies Canada the country’s national bird conservation organization. Their mission is to advance and encourage the wider understanding, appreciation, and conservation of wild birds and their habitats. Walk the self-guided nature trails, scan Long Point’s Inner Bay form the viewing stand, or relax on the deck and watch for shorebirds or waterfowl in Basic’s managed wetland/mudflats complex. The Long Point Bird Observatory is open in spring from April 1 to early June and fall from mid August to November 1. During the morning visitors can observe the bird banding and visitor center with its informative displays.

Day 1 - Morning - Visit the Old Cut Field Station and observe bird banding. Walk the trails around the observatory for sightings of spring migrants. Picnic Seating Available.
Afternoon – Walk the trail along The Big Creek National Wildlife Area.

Day 2Morning – Tour Bird Studies Canada headquarters and walks the nature trails. Visit the wetlands/mudflats complex.
Afternoon - Visit the Wilson Tract and Roman wood Sanctuary, a spot where over100 breeding species nest.

Day 3 - Touring day of the area with “A Birding Guide to the Long Pint Area” and “A Seasonal Checklist of the Birds of the Long Point Area". Find 30 significant birding trails, lookouts and sanctuaries within a short distance. Bike or drive to these birding hotspots.
